Should Academic Support Services Be Mandatory?

Today, Inside Higher Ed published a compelling article raising the question, “Should academic support services be mandatory?”  They referenced a study from the Center for Community College Student Engagement.  The study, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among others, analyzed a broad spectrum of data concerning student success in community colleges.  It contained many statistics, but perhaps the most interesting was that of the 181 community colleges surveyed, 77% reported having early alert and early intervention processes, but only 14% of their students reported that someone at the college actually reached out to them when they were struggling with their studies.
